How to install non-Market applications on Android

This week’s tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system’s built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.
When an Android user wants to install a new application, they usually just fire up the Market app, search for it, and install it with a couple of well-aimed button taps.
There are times, however, when you may want to load a non-Market application. For example, a perfectly good application may get banned from the market, but still be available from its original publisher.

Farcical Xoom 4G Upgrade Plan Requires 6-Day Mail-In Operation
The Xoom tablet has a respectably fast Verizon 3G connection, but Motorola promises a free upgrade to Verizon’s faster 4G network within a few months.
To do that, however, you’ll need to ship your Xoom back to the manufacturer for more than a week.
It’s not often I laugh out loud when researching a post, but when [...]

My Message To Google: Stop Cheating
In mid February, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt expressed pride in Google employee Wael Ghonim?s brave struggle against the autocratic Mubarak regime to establish political transparency in Egypt. “We are very, very proud of what Wael and that group was able to do in Egypt,? Schmidt said in Barcelona. But what Schmidt needs to do now is apply Ghonim?s views about political transparency to Google?s own search business. With its 70% control of the global online search market, Google?s power to make and break online businesses is unrivalled. So it?s not surprising that website owners want more transparency over the reasons why the often autocratic Google sometimes impose penalties on their businesses. But a report issued last week by the newsnavigator OneNewsPage found a distinct lack of transparency in the search business with 88% of respondents saying that paid search advertising costs lacked transparency, while 24% said that they had experienced large, unexplained falls in site traffic as a consequence of changes in their search engine status.

Sony indicates all future Alpha models will include translucent mirrors
That satisfying clunk of the mirror swinging up and away, the rapid-fire clatter of DSLRs going into burst mode, could be on its last legs. Well, for Sony Alphas at least. The company has confirmed that its translucent mirror tech, most recently confirmed to be coming to the A77 and earlier shown on the A55 and A33, will be coming to the entire Alpha line. The sensor actually captures light through the mirror itself, which is just reflective enough to allow for real-time focusing even while capturing video. It’s something of a bold move in the generally stoic DSLR market, and only time will tell whether it helps to boost Sony’s street cred up to Canon and Nikon levels.

Fade is Canabalt for llama lovers
This game had me at the intro. I usually don’t care for the intros many of these games have; I often tend to skip them, even if it sometimes means not understanding the game as well as I could. But when Fade loaded, there was a message written in tiny letters saying I can skip the intro, but that it is highly recommended to continue. I decided to heed the message, and I’m happy I did! It’s truly beautiful, and made me feel something. [Erez is secretly a heartless, soulless robot -Ed] You should try the game just for the intro.

Square Connect SQ Blaster and SQ Remote review: Home automation, unified
Having already taken our first feverish steps down the path of an automated home, we figured it was time to try and integrate the home entertainment system with the household lighting. Our goal coming into this review was to sit down on the sofa and hit a single button on an old, unused iPhone 3G to automatically dim the lights, fire up the 5.1 sound, flip on the media streamer, and ignite the projector. To accomplish this seemingly monumental task we installed a WiFi-enabled SQ Blaster in the TV cabinet, a puck-shaped IR blaster from Square Connect that communicates with MiOS home control gateways like Mi Casa Verde’s Vera. So, did we succeed? Did we achieve the ultimate in home-owner nerdvana? You’d better believe it. Read on to find out how.
