Any Watch Can Tell the Time, But Few Can Actually Stop the Time [Watches]
It appears that the latest must-have feature on luxury watches isn’t dozens of tectonic plates; dinosaur bone fragments or the kitchen sink—it’s the ability to stop the time. Imagine harried Russian oligarchs allowing their mistresses a few minutes of untimed sexytime. More »

Skype 5 for Mac continues to frustrate — how’s it treating you?
It’s rare that a new piece of software generates only positive feedback, but the world’s most popular VoIP app has seemingly frustrated throngs of loyal Mac users, including a number of technologically savvy individuals within these very walls. A brilliant comparison of the old vs. new has emerged over at Ignore The Code (linked down below for your perusal), and it got us wondering — are average consumers seeing this any differently? There’s no question that Skype 5 for Mac looks a heck of a lot like the Windows build, but as the aforesaid article points out, it seems that the UI engineers lowered the standard of the OS X version rather than dragging the Windows variant up. What makes the new edition so difficult to swallow is just how ideal the prior model was — now, it’s a chore to spot contacts, initiate chats and handle the most basic of tasks that Skype should handle. So, we’ll leave it to you: is Skype heading in the wrong direction in terms of usability and functionality, or should the collective world just get a grip?

- Deodexed, Debloated, DeBinged, and mostly, DeTouchwizzed.
- Visual voice mail is gone, voice mail button in the dialer now opens Google Voice.
- Verizon Wireless carrier banner replaced.
- Messaging app will not longer do multi-part messages, but instead converts to MMS automatically once the 160 character mark is hit.

Useful keyboard shortcuts for Twitter.com

When Twitter.com unveiled its recent overhaul at the end of 2010, one of the least-discussed features was the addition of some excellent keyboard shortcuts.
Some keyboard shortcuts only work from some pages, but we’ll mark those where appropriate.
- n — post a new status update (works from any page)
- r — reply to your selected tweet
- t — retweet (only works on Twitter profiles other than your own)
- m — direct message (but it doesn’t auto-fill the recipient)
- / – move the cursor to the search box
- . — move back to the top of the page, and check feed for updates
- g then h – go to your home page (twitter.com)
- g then r – see your @ mentions
- g then m – see your direct messages
- g then p – go to your profile page (twitter.com/username)
- g then u – go to a specific user’s profile page (it pops up a dialog box)
For a complete list of keyboard shortcuts, type ?.

TechCrunch Disrupt NYC 2011: Get Your Applications In Soon
TechCrunch Disrupt is back and in a big way. The conference we launched last year in New York and San Francisco and is coming back this year and this time we are going global by adding another destination – Beijing. All three conferences will be packed with the best new startups, all-star speakers, free WiFi, and after parties. The first Disrupt will take place in New York City on May 23rd to 25th, right after our Hackathon on May 21st to 22nd where developers come together to create a product in 24 hours. Like we’ve said before, anything can happen at these events. During Disrupt last year, we launched two dozen startups (the winner was international startup, Soluto), Charlie Rose kicked off the event by interviewing legendary VC John Doerr, Carol Bartz told Michael Arrington to *ahem*, and we even had a real company emerge from our Hackathon, GroupMe, which later went on to raise $10.6 million. You can read about co-founder Jared Hecht’s experience at Disrupt here. If you are building a company or a product that you feel is going to make a huge impact and change the world, we want you to apply. There are no fees to apply or compete, and startups from around the globe are welcome to submit their company or product for consideration. But the deadline for submissions is looming. We will be accepting submissions through Sunday, April 3, 2011 at midnight PST. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Please submit your application HERE on our Disrupt application site powered by Producteev.
