Buzz Off, Google Buzz

Two days ago, we removed the Google Buzz button from the top and bottom of each post on TechCrunch. No one noticed. Not a single person said a word about it. It wasn’t until earlier today when I tweeted about it that we got some feedback on the change (most of it being: “oh, I didn’t even notice”). As I tweeted, that in and of itself says a lot. The issue of Buzz being a viable sharing platform used to be somewhat of a hot-button issue. When I wrote a post last March noting that traffic coming our way from Buzz appeared to be less than that of a dead man, FriendFeed, many folks got up in arms. It turns out, my data was flawed ? but it wasn’t necessarily wrong. You see, since Buzz runs within Gmail, which defaults to HTTPS, it scrubs the referrer data before sending the traffic our way. So, conveniently, the only way to measure Buzz traffic was to infer it. Like a black hole.

Dymo LabelManager PnP Review

DYMO PnP (Plug and Play) Label Manager. This device enables you to make and print labels using your computer interface and prints directly to the label maker tape device. Remember the old days in label making?  They weren’t necessarily good old days either.  For those too young to remember, skip this review because I think [...]

Shocker! Free Android apps outnumber free iPhone apps

Good news for Android users who hate paying for stuff: according to new numbers from Netherlands-based mobile analytics group Distimo, there are now more free apps available for Google’s mobile OS than the iPhone, at 134,342 to 121,845. There are a few things to consider here: first, when one adds free iPad-only apps, the total number of gratis iOS apps increases to a more competitive 132,239. And then there’s Apple’s sometimes rigorous vetting process, which has probably played a role in its numeric slippage — after all, this report doesn’t highlight things like legality, repetition, or the overall number of apps dedicated to making farting noises. Also, Apple has a lot more premium apps, giving it the overall lead at 333,124 to 206,143 — but between Android’s rapid growth and what the report terms iOS’s relative stagnation, Distimo expects Google to take the top spot in five months’ time, outnumbering iPhone and iPad apps combined — a rough scenario for Cupertino to stomach, no doubt, but at least the company will still have Windows Phone to kick around a while longer. Print Photos Directly from Your Phone ? The Bolle BP-10 Photo Printer is Now Available in the US

Back in November, 2010, Julie told us about the Bolle BP-10 Photo Printer.  At the time, the printer was available as a pre-order from a European company.  Now, the Bolle is available as the iPhone Photo Printer from Hammacher Schlemmer.  It produces photo-quality prints directly from a docked iPhone or iPod touch.  Simply donwload a [...]

Windows 8 Explorer to feature Ribbon UI, SkyDrive and Mesh integration?

windows 8 explorer ribbon

Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott have posted a second look at some of the early changes which have surface in Windows 8 milestone 3. First there was the restyled Welcome Screen, and now it appears that Microsoft is toying with bringing the Ribbon UI to Explorer.

The Ribbon, like in Microsoft Word and Excel, is context-aware, adding tabs for specific tasks which apply to the folder you’re viewing — such as library or picture management. You can also make out two new buttons in the status bar, which allow you to change the current folder’s view style.

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop’s battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top — though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn’t necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11′s case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we’d really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test…

Casio G’zOne Commando initial review

Casio G'zOne Commando

I kind of want to throw the Casio G’zOne Commando. Or at least just drop it. Maybe kick it down the street a little. Can’t decide if that’s because it’s rugged to the point where it’s trying to pick a fight, or if it’s because of the ridiculous name.

Anyhoo, it’s got a 3.6-inch display at 800×480, 1GB of ROM (though we’re only showing 309MB available) and 512MB of RAM, powered by an 800MHz processor running Android 2.2.1. there’s a 5MP camera and all the other usual features, including a notification light.

How the iPad Has Helped Create More Jobs

Last week Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. made a comment about the iPad being a “job killer” which really got me thinking. My first reaction was how could someone possibly make such a statement? I have to say I totally disagree and I sincerely mean that in an unbiased way. Also, I mean absolutely no disrespect [...]

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The Coldest Freezer on Earth Isn’t a Freezer At All [Monster Machines]

Today’s the first day it’s actually hot in New York. And now, we wanna be cold again. Or eat cold things. Like the coldest popsicle on Earth, from the coldest freezer on earth. But it turns out the coldest freezer isn’t a freezer, in the traditional sense, at all. It’s a series of magnets. More »
