(Sort Of) Live From The Beijing Hackathon: We Talk To The Hackers

Our own Greg Kumparak walked through the Hackathon Hall this evening, talking to all and sundry about their projects. Some notable hacks included an app for the ladies. How does it work? In Asia, guys buy girls gifts before they ask them out. With this app, the ladies can take a picture of an item and then broadcast her desire for it to the men nearby. The fellow who is quickest to his wallet will, it is assumed, receive a date. For those still working on projects, may I suggest a related app that would involve a system for giving me beer and Peking duck on demand, no dates promised or expected?

Fire from your wrists? Oh yes you can

Lighter Cufflinks are something I never imagined before… but then I don’t wear cufflinks and am obviously not awesome enough to come up with such a crazy cool idea. These working lighters are made of polished metal and measure 7/8″ high by 3/4″ wide by 1/2″ thick (22mm x 19mm x 12mm). You can buy [...]

Scrabble Helper helps you improve your Words With Friends gameplay

scrabblehelper

If you play Scrabble (or a scrabble-like game) from time to time, you may want to check out Scrabble Helper. This simple website is a godsend when you’re at a loss for words. Simply enter whatever letters you have, and the word you’d like to connect with. Scrabble helper comes up with a whole bunch of suggestions sorted by score.

The site lets you select one of five dictionaries – Scrabble International/US, Lexulous International/US, and Words With Friends. Some people might say this constitutes cheating — I think if the other side knows you’re doing it, it’s definitely not cheating. And it doesn’t take the challenge out of the game, because implementing Scrabble Helper’s suggestions and deciding which words you’d like to connect with still takes a fair bit of thought.

Google TV, take two, arrives next week with Honeycomb, Android Market

It has been a long year for Google TV. The first (and only, so far) round of hardware started shipping in October 2010 and at the time, promised the Android Marketplace with its wealth of third party apps early in the next year. That clearly didn’t happen, and it quickly became most notable for what it was being blocked from doing, like streaming video from TV providers like Hulu and various network TV websites. After various false starts and delays, Sony Google TV and Logitech Revue hardware will finally receive updates to Android 3.1 Honeycomb (congratulations Google, now where’s Ice Cream Sandwich?) starting this weekend with Sony up first and Logitech “shortly thereafter.” The biggest additions are the aforementioned apps, a new interface, and a refocused system for content discovery that starts with the new TV & Movies app pictured above. Check out the gallery for more pictures of the new Google TV, while more details and videos follow after the break.

A sneak peek at the next version of Android Market and Music app

Android Honeycomb'ish smartphone Music appUpdate: Tech From 10 seems to be offline — but we have lots of images and a hands-on review if you want to see what the new Music app is like.

In what is probably a bit of a big-G whoopsie, the folks at Tech From 10 woke up to find a new, test version of Android Market installed on their Galaxy S.

Visually, the new version is almost identical. The carousel of featured apps has been updated slightly, and apps now have a ‘Content rating,’ but that’s it (image after the break). The interesting bit, however, is the inclusion of alpha and beta apps — most notably, there’s a new version of the Music app, which looks like a scaled-down version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music app (see right).
